In Philadelphia, a science teacher named Elliot (Mark Wahlberg) and his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel) learn that strange events are occurring in New York. People are killing themselves or allowing themselves to die without trying to stop it. It is reported that a neurotoxin is the culprit and that it might have originated in algae or other plant life. Elliot, Alma, and their friend Julian (John Leguizamo) and his daughter Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez) flee their home and end up hiding in an abandoned house. Elliot, Alma, and Jess are finally able to go home when the phenomenon seems to be over—at least in the U. S.
