It is year 1967, Hong Kong. Chow Mo Wan (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) is a journalist who just came back from Singapour after he left his wife. He is in a hotel room 2046, disapoinnted in life and he is thinking about Su Li Zhen (Li Gong), the only woman he truly loved and whom he met five years ago. They were in the same hotel room together, five years ago. He begins to write a novel, a sci-fi love story about future, about a man who falls in love with a female cyborg. He thinks that he is writing about future, but actually he is writing about the past...
