A humble bookkeeper in China twenty-five hundred years ago, living in a feudal Chinese society that is cruel, changes his job to teacher and philosopher. With his witty sound bytes, Confucius (Chow Yun-Fat) becomes all the rage around the countryside for his revolutionary approach to fair government and justice in daily life. Among his followers is Nan Zi (Xun Zhou), mistress to the king. Yet, he soon falls from favor after advising the king on battle plans. Gathering together seventy-two disciples, he spends the rest of his life wandering in exile, dismissed and shunned wherever he goes. Yet, his wisdom and preaching of civility grows in importance and reaches a new generation.
