The film tells the story of a sea plane pilot called Porco Rosso in the period between two world wars. Porco was cursed when he was younger to have a form of a pig so he lives alone in the Adriatic where he is well known as probably the best pilot around since he often crosses his path with pirates. After meeting Donald Curtis at Gina's cafe, he is soon targeted and shot down. Porco manages to reach his old friend Piccolo, owner of an aircraft design shop. Piccolo builds him a new plane, and Fio, his granddaughter joins him on his way back home. After returning, he is challenged by Donald to a sea plane duel. As the duel is played out, the Italian air force tries to attack, but warned by Gina, everybody manages to escape. After that we get a description of years to follow, and the end is left to the viewer's imagination.
